Together

Together

So much is happening in our world right now. It’s hard for me to wrap my brain around it. We were already in the midst of trying to cope with the Coronavirus and all of the social distancing, lost jobs, closed businesses, and shelter-in-place churches…now this. Another senseless death.

There was no reason that Mr. George Floyd should not have made it back home to his family on May 25, 2020. For eight minutes, and 46 seconds an officer of the law…someone who took an oath to uphold justice, to protect and to serve, threw it all out the window as he jammed his knee into the side of a man’s neck until he died. I don’t think I will ever understand that kind of hate, and I am glad that I won’t. We should all be outraged enough to do something. But what do we do to stop that kind of hate? How can we make a difference? What do we say to our Black boys/men? How can they ever feel safe? How can any of us feel safe? I have more questions than answers, and maybe that’s how it begins. We have to ask the questions that will help us understand the problem before we can work on the solution.

We cannot afford to be passive about this issue anymore. Shaking our heads, and locking ourselves behind closed doors is not going to solve the problem. We have to be bold enough to enact laws, and legislation that will hold people accountable for breaking the law…especially if they wear a badge. We have to put our money where our mouth is by helping to fund those initiatives. We have to put people in office who walk the talk, and when they don’t…we have to vote them out. We have to make our communities a safe place for our families and children to live and to work, because whether we like it or not, we are in this together. Contrary to what some may think…this is not a Black issue–it is a human being issue, and it affects us all.

Until next time…

Use Your Gifts

Use Your Gifts

Lately, I have been glued to social media. I think I am watching it more than I do television…and that is BIG for me. I am just so blown away by all of the creativity out there. Many folks are taking advantage of the time to learn new skills, or teach someone else how to do what they have always loved to do.

I have seen professional comedians, actors, and singers work together to provide online concerts. I have even seen those who have always aspired to do those things, and maybe never pursued it for whatever reason, take that leap on social media. I have even been going on Facebook myself to tell my family funny stories about the crazy things that happen to me in my everyday life.

Whatever you have ever wanted to try…now is the time to do it. God has given each one of us at least one thing we can use to not only bless others, but to honor Him. When we use the gifts God has given us, I believe it makes Him smile. He wants us to use e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. I emphasize that because I have heard people look down on their gifts. Comparing ourselves to others is so unproductive, and it says to God that He basically messed up…everything He did wasn’t good. God doesn’t make mistakes. We may not understand it or even like it, but it was necessary for His purpose. We just have to trust Him.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of discovering what that thing is, and we can only do that through knowing what God says about us. And the best way to do that is to spend time getting to know Him. I know I say it a lot, but God’s word is our road map to every situation we will ever face. Read it with your heart wide open, and watch Him work.

Until next time…

Changed

Changed

This is the perfect time for us to start something new. A new way of living or learning or just being. This really is a new season, and we are seeing and hearing things that we never have before. Not all of them are positive or good, but mostly everything has changed. For the most part, even our thinking has changed. Most of us never thought we would live to see the day when it would be against the rules…maybe even illegal, to gather together–even in our homes.

What most of us saw as normal has changed. Of course, normal has always been different for each of us. What “seems” normal to you, may be crazy and out of the box for me. And in this season, we have the opportunity to redefine how we feel about what “normal” really means to us.

I am trying hard not to waste a lot of time on wishing the coronavirus had never happened or wishing our leadership had made better choices. That’s just unproductive, and it basically gets me nowhere. I am working hard to embrace this new space I am finding myself in, and really trying to focus on what God is speaking to me. I am spending more time just loving myself for a change, and I’m learning things about myself that I believe are going to make me better and stronger.

I have to admit, I still get caught up in those conversations where we just complain about our current circumstances. But, they are beginning to be fewer and fewer as time goes on. I prefer to stay focused on the positive things that are happening around me. Like, hearing about a pastor who purchased Mother’s Day cards to donate to people who had not purchased their cards yet, or the story I saw online that showed someone posting sticky notes of encouragement on people’s doors, or the guy who just drove up to the drive-in windows to give people money.

I am excited and encouraged by the great things that are happening around the world. It just helps to make the bad things that are still happening a little more bearable.

Until next time…

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Today, I want to first honor mothers all over the world. This is the day that the world has set aside to appreciate women for their AMAZING contribution. Take advantage of it. Put your feet up and let someone take care of you for a change.

I also want to send out a message to all of the women who are not mothers or for whatever reason can’t be with their mothers today. God. Sees. You. He knows what you are feeling today, and He loves you so much. He has made it so that even on days like today you can find something to still smile about. Look for it. Don’t let the enemy cause you to dwell on the things you don’t have. Remember all of the good things that you do have. Your life may not be what you had hoped it would be, but you have life, and if you have life–you have hope.

Our hope is not in the things of this world–our hope is in the one true and living God. He makes things that seem unbearable…bearable. He will go before us and make all those crooked places straight. He has promised that He will always be there; that He will never leave us, and that He will be our comforter and friend. Even when we don’t feel Him; even when He doesn’t answer the way we think He should, and even in the middle of a pandemic…He is there. Keep trusting and believing. God hears, He knows and He cares.

Until next time…

We may need to slow down

We may need to slow down

Lately, there has been a lot of talk about relaxing the restrictions around being out in public. Now, I’m just speaking for myself here, but I can be pretty stubborn when it comes to doing what I want to do. And I definitely don’t like people making decisions for me, but this time, I want to make sure that I am using wisdom…and not boredom.

People want to get back to their lives. I get it. I am all for getting our lives back, but I don’t want to move so fast that I miss the lesson–and there is always a lesson. Recently, I came across something that I wrote a few years ago that seems appropriate right now.

“I am a firm believer that God looks for ways to bless us. Why wouldn’t He? He loves us and just like any good father, He wants to see His children prosper and succeed. He says so in His word. God knows us and He knows exactly what we need…even though sometimes we believe He moves a little too slow.”

Second Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”  I believe that God has given us this time to get it together; to get our priorities in line with His. He wants to give us every opportunity to come to Him…willingly. My prayer is that we don’t miss it.

God is not slow about anything He does. He’s purposeful. We may not always like what He does, or understand what He does, but He really does want what’s best for us. We just have to slow down long enough to take advantage of it.

Until next time…

Spending time with God

Spending time with God

God is so brilliant. I use the word “brilliant” only because my vocabulary is inadequate to express what my heart wants to say. Even though this is a very chaotic time for us, God is bringing order out of all the chaos.

I believe that minds are being renewed during this time. What I mean by that is, we are beginning to recognize what really is important. We are realizing that we don’t have to go full-speed all the time. That it’s okay to say no, and not have the world fall apart. That it’s okay if we don’t go to every program at church or school, and that our families will live if we take a weekend for ourselves every now and then.

I know it may sound trite, but we really do need to make God our priority. He deserves to be first in our lives. We get angry with Him when it doesn’t seem like He puts us first, but we do that to Him all the time. We keep making our own plans…without consulting Him, and then when it doesn’t work out, we feel like He has let us down. We keep going when He clearly tells us to stop, and sometimes we even try to tell Him what He needs to do for us.

[OK, so I may have been just talking about myself back there…]

Seriously though, we should take advantage of this time to renew our relationship with our Father. To just get alone with Him, and talk to Him about everything. I know that some of us may find it hard to spend uninterrupted time with God…especially if we are shut in with a full house, or still working outside of the home. But when we do, God honors our sacrifice, and strengthens us for the journey ahead.

Until next time…

Changing World

Changing World

One of the things I am noticing during this time of being shut in is that we are some fickle folks. For various reasons, people are not overjoyed at the thought of being shut in alone or even with family members. And I am not talking about those who may be in physical or mental harm. I am speaking of the ones who have prayed to have time off from work, or who wanted to have more time to do…well, nothing. For those folks I say…find a way to make the best of it. Because it will be over before you know it, and you will be wishing that you had spent more time enjoying it.

For many, this has been a very productive time. Some are taking this time to work on new projects, organize closets, learn new skills, start new businesses or even spend uninterrupted time alone with God. Sadly, all of us are not having that same experience. So, we have work to do. That means we have to be more creative when reaching out to others.

I have seen some really creative ideas for keeping in touch. Some of my friends and family members have started getting together online to throw birthday parties or game nights. I recently saw online that a group of people got together to drive by their pastor’s house to wave and blow their car horns to let him know how much they missed him. I saw a mother who got together with other family members to wish her daughter a happy birthday. And I even saw a group of police officers drive by with sirens blaring to give a little girl gifts for her birthday. I have seen pastors preaching from the back of trucks and people all over the world singing in worship to the Lord. How awesome is that! It is refreshing to see folks really stepping up for one another. From going to the grocery store for a neighbor to making phone calls to check in on folks. Our world will never be the same, and I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing.

A bright side

A bright side

Our world right now is a little topsy turvy. Things that used to seem logical, now seem illogical. People who appeared to have all the answers are lost for words. And we all are feeling…different. Many of the things we had planned have mostly had to be cancelled or rescheduled, and it remains to be seen if anything we planned will happen at all this year.  And then God.

He has a way of helping us look for a bright side.

Many of the things we thought were so important are not so important after all. Most of us never thought we would be dreaming about the day we could get back to work, or go to the laundromat, or even go outside without a mask. We just want to get back to what feels…normal. But what feels like the worst thing that could ever happen is actually teaching us to appreciate life more.

I know for me…maybe for the first time ever, I am learning to really be still. I am learning to not only hear God’s voice, but to hear my own. And I am learning to stop leaning on what is good to me, instead of leaning on what God wants for me. I sometimes think about things way too long, hoping to get confirmation; when all I need to do is trust what God is showing me. If nothing else comes of this “sheltering in place,” I have learned that there is always a bright side to every situation even when it doesn’t feel like it. We just have to look for it.

Until next time…

Stay focused

Stay focused

When I am feeling down, my two cats, Bizzy and Jack always find a way to make me smile. One day, I was working at my computer, and I was having a hard time completing a task for work, and it was starting to get the best of me. I was sitting there feeling kind of useless, when my cat Bizzy meowed. When I looked at him, he quickly began moving towards me.

At first, I didn’t pay it any attention, but then I noticed that as he was walking, he wasn’t looking to the left or to the right–just straight into my eyes. It was amazing. I couldn’t stop watching him, and for some reason, it hit my spirit in a way that made me feel all weepy inside. What I realized was that I wanted to be just like that when I look at God. I want to be able to keep my eyes on Him…no matter what. That even if the world were crumbling around me, my focus on God would not waiver.

More than ever, our world needs something to hold onto right now. Our faith is being tested like never before. This Coronavirus is like nothing most of us have ever seen. There are so many updates, statistics, and warnings that it is overwhelming. I have spoken to people who are fearful of going out, and to some extent…of staying in. But, I am determined not to live my life in fear. So, in the midst of all of this uncertainty, God is answering my prayer by giving me the opportunity to be just like Bizzy, and keep my gaze fixed on Him.

Until next time…

This year, I’m celebrating!

This year, I’m celebrating!

The word for today is…Grateful.

With so many ways to communicate, it is sometimes hard to keep up. It’s an all day event to read your emails, update your blog, check in with Facebook, try to stay LinkedIn and write something Tweet worthy. I was speaking with a friend recently and we were talking about how many different ways there are of communicating. The funny thing is…with so many ways you would think that families would be closer and we’d talk to friends more often, but sadly that’s not the case. One of my missions this year is to love more and to not spend so much time trying to keep up with technology. I don’t want to become so technically inclined that I forget how to have a real conversation. The other thing I want to do this year is to learn to celebrate. I’m not talking about just the big things—I want to celebrate everything. I want to celebrate when God opens a door, but I also want to celebrate when He closes one. I want to celebrate the special occasions, but I also want to celebrate the little things like being able to eat ice cream on a warm summer day. I want to celebrate having a great day, but I also want to celebrate the not so great days, because He made it and that’s enough for me. Simply put…I want to live purposefully. I want my life to reflect how grateful I am to God for everything. Even the things I don’t like so much, because I know they teach me lessons I may not have learned any other way. Our God is a keeper. He has kept me through some really rough times and He is still keeping me now. So this year I’m going to honor Him by being grateful, loving more and celebrating often. How about you?

Until next time…
